  Planning & Design

As a recognized technical leader in its field, NCC is regularly invited to participate in major tunneling projects from the earliest stages. We have performed feasibility studies, planning, and design for numerous shield tunnels. Notably, we designed the lining for Japan’s largest shield tunnel, the 13.9-m diameter tunnel of the Tokyo Bay Aqua Line; we also supervised its construction. Immersed tube tunnels are a comparatively rare type of tunnel, yet of the ten or so constructed in Japan, NCC has undertaken the design for six of them, including the most famous, the Tokyo Port Daiichi Tunnel.

NCC makes use of the latest technology to provide rational designs for tunnel lining structures. We employ “ultimate stress analysis” a modern design technique based on the history and characteristics of lining structure failure.

Design of lining structure

NCC designs linings to resist the destructive agents of moisture, salt, and exhaust chemicals. Our waterproof lining joints reliably prevent the leakage of water and thus minimize administrative and maintenance costs.
With Japan being an earthquake-prone country, NCC provides superior services in anti-seismic design using advanced numerical analysis technology. Our designs incorporate flexible segment rings between vulnerable tunnel sections to cope with seismic forces. These rings can withstand up to 200 mm of deformation
