As a recognized technical leader in its field, NCC is regularly
invited to participate in major tunneling projects from the
earliest stages. We have performed feasibility studies, planning,
and design for numerous shield tunnels. Notably, we designed
the lining for Japan’s largest shield tunnel, the 13.9-m diameter
tunnel of the Tokyo Bay Aqua Line; we also supervised its construction.
Immersed tube tunnels are a comparatively rare type of tunnel,
yet of the ten or so constructed in Japan, NCC has undertaken
the design for six of them, including the most famous, the
Tokyo Port Daiichi Tunnel.
NCC makes use of the latest technology to provide
rational designs for tunnel lining structures. We employ
“ultimate stress analysis” a modern design technique
based on the history and characteristics of lining
structure failure.
